Green Island

Located in the Great Barrier Reef, Green Island is a 6000 year old beauty. The island is only wide, but carries over 120 different native species of plants! The island is easily reached by boat from Cairns, only 45 minutes away by catamaran. The use of Green Island dates back before the 1700’s when aboriginals used the island for a multitude of activities including hunting and fishing. Now, the island is home to a resort, crocodile farm, and a boardwalk that spans the entire island! With a width of only 1.6 kilometres, it comes as a complete surprise that this tiny coral cay also has its own rainforest. It’s the only one in the world that does! The diversity of this cay does not stop there. There are about 55 species of birds on the island, and has over 190 types of hard corals in its reef.

With Green Island being surrounded by water, you can bet the best activities will be spent in the water. There’s a water sport, interest, and tour for just about anybody on Green Island. Whether you want to snorkel, scuba dive, take a glass boat tour, or try something completely new like a sea walk on the bottom of the ocean, the activities are endless.

After a long day out in the sun, take advantage of the Green Island Resort. With first-class amenities including a luxurious spa, this resort is a great option if you want to treat yourself to a little pampering. There are also plenty of places around the island to dine out including buffet, cafe, and fine dining restaurants.

There are several tour options available to venture out to Green Island from Cairns. Whether you have a half or full-day ahead of you, there are tours to fit around your schedule. Take a tour out on a glass boat and hike around the island on a self-guided eco walk. Head to one of the many dining establishments for a bite to eat before catching the next boat back to Cairns. If you have more time to explore the island, stay a night or two at the resort and get involved with some of the resort’s activities or hire a kayak to get out and see the island from the water. If being in the air sounds better than being in the water, take advantage of the scenic flights over Green Island, a must do for every flying enthusiast.

Green Island is a special place located in one of the Seven Wonders of the World. With being less than an hour from Cairns, there’s no excuse not to get out there and visit!
