Kuranda Skyrail & Scenic Rail Experience From Cairns Itinerary
Just 25 km northwest of Cairns in Queensland’s tropical north, Kuranda is a village surrounded by rainforest rich in life. The oldest tropical rainforest anywhere in the world, its attractions are not only natural but also cultural. To do them the justice they deserve look no further than our Kuranda Tour! Explore this quirky town and its stunning natural attractions via the unique Skyrail and Scenic Railway on our trip from Cairns.
The day begins with hotel pickup mid-morning in the state’s far north. After a quick bus trip, you’ll have the chance to be suspended high above the forest canopy in a gondola of the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Your ticket allows you to temporarily alight at its Red Peak and Barron Falls stations, taking in the beautiful scenery.
At Freshwater Station, on the opposite side of Mount Whitfield Conservation Park to central Cairns, jump straight aboard the carriages of the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Take your pick of the best seats, without having to queue for tickets, which have already been organized for you.
From its windows, you’ll be able to experience a journey first taken in 1891. It will take you through the stunning beauty of Barron Gorge to the heart of the tree-clad Macalister Mountains at Kuranda. Stretching for 37 km and lasting just under two hours, you’ll not only cross the stream of Stony Creek Falls, but also come face to face with Surprise Falls and Barron Falls with a pause at a dedicated lookout.
Your tour continues with around three and a half hours of free time to explore all Kuranda has to offer. Having admired the art and handicrafts available at the stalls of the Heritage Market, you may like to add-on a trip to Kuranda Koala Gardens, one of the few places in Queensland where it’s possible to hold these icons of Australia.
