What to see along the Gillies Range?

Cathedral Fig Tree

Within a pocket of rainforests lies a century old tree. This 500-year-old is a Cathedral Fig Tree. It is a type of strangler tree species; and grows on top of another tree, trying to pierce their roots into the ground below it. The curtain effect of the tree is basically a slow-motion strangle, which kills the host tree and leaves the Fig to grow independently. It is such a unique sight, and well worth the stopover on your way to the Atherton Tablelands.

Volcanic Crater Lake Barrine

This freshwater lake was formed by a volcano eruption over 17,000 years ago. The eruption leaving a large crater which was eventually filled with water and wildlife. The lake is surrounded by a world heritage national park, filled with lush greenery and an array of flora and fauna. Lake Barrine Tea House is a great place to see this sight while you grab a snack. Offering homemade goodies which as scones, muffins, and savoury pastries.

Lake Eacham

Hop out of your stuffy car and refresh at the lake! A stunning natural wonderland, the lake a clear blue, surrounded by a lush carpet of green. Offer swimming, canoeing, and picnic areas for the family. Whether you feel like a quick dip, a tranquil cruise around the lake or just a relaxing stop by the water, Lake Eacham is for you.

Yungaburra

For a quick lunch, visit the small town of Yungaburra. With rolling green hills, waterfalls, and lush rainforests surrounding the area, you can marvel at the scenery as you wander through the town. Wander through the town’s charming country shops to browse the art, fresh produce, and homemade crafts. A great highlight of this area if the platypus viewing area. Keep your eyes peeled out for these cute little creatures whizzing through the water. Although the viewing is available all day, the best times to visit are morning and dusk.

Gadgarra forest reserve

Submerge yourself in the lush terrain of the rainforest at the forest reserve. Listen out for the bird calls and keep your eyes peeled out for the rustling bushes around you. A peaceful paradise only a step away from the busy route of Gillies range.
