It’s always good to be prepared for any trip! Your trip to Cairns is no different. Here are 7 things we reckon you’ll need for Cairns.
Get yourself ready for your exciting trip to Cairns!
The chances are, you’ll be heading up to Cairns to explore the magic of the surroundings. Either you’re exploring the lush tropical rainforest, or the boutique town of Port Douglas!
Whatever you’re doing with your time in Cairns, make sure you’re well prepared with the right equipment!
1. Water bottle
Queensland is hot! Make sure you stay hydrated by bringing a water bottle. The big water bottles are a good idea because they’ll hold heaps of water. Getting one with a colourful pattern or design might also help remind you to drink more water.
You can drink the tap water in Cairns, and there are water refill stations dotted around everywhere.
2. Mosquito repellent
There are lots of mosquitoes in Cairns! There are lots of mosquitoes alongside the esplanade.
Like all bugs, mosquitoes love water, and being right by the water in this humid climate, Cairns is the perfect home to plenty of mozzies!
Make sure you pack your mosquito repellent. Spray or cream that contains DEET is the most effective, strongest form of repellent.
3. Sunscreen
Make sure you buy TGA-regulated and approved sunscreen! There are holes in the ozone layer over Australia, which means the sun is stronger here. The UV index is high.
All sunscreens have to be independently tested in Australia to make sure they can protect skin against the harsh weather. Make sure you’re getting the right level of protection!
4. Swimming costume
Taking your swimming costume is like remembering to drink water, for Aussies! In Cairns, you might not be able to swim in the ocean, but you might take a dip in the safe snorkelling areas near Fitzroy Island or Green Island.
5. Hat and sunnies
Bringing your hat and sunnies is a must! It will help keep the sun from your face, and your eyes will be protected from the sun’s rays.
You’ll be grateful for bringing your sunnies if you do any boat trips. Looking out over the scenery is beautiful, but bright!
6. Comfy shoes
You’ll likely be walking around a lot, particularly if you venture up into the Daintree from Cairns! We’d recommend some closed-toe shoes that have a good grip, as some of the wooden boardwalks in the Daintree can be a little slippery. Plus, having closed-toe shoes will protect your skin against any critters.
