Exploring Cairns Esplanade

Welcome to the tropical city of Far North Queensland! Cairns is the tropical jewel of Far North Queensland.

If you’re exploring the Great Barrier Reef, then it’s very likely you’ll find yourself in this famous Queensland city. Although it’s chilled-out locals, palm-lined streets, and a bustling esplanade feel like a year-round holiday rather than a working city. Cairns is where cosmopolitan meets tropical.

The Esplanade

While you’re exploring Cairns, you won’t miss the Esplanade! Even if you’re passing through Cairns for a short time, wandering along the Esplanade is a must-do while you’re here.

The 2.5km wooden pathway stretches across the shoreline of this tropical city, offering great views of the waterfront.

With a promenade feel to it, the Cairns Esplanade is a meeting spot, a communal hub of outdoor barbeques, and a popular viewpoint spot.

It’s free, it’s fun, and it ties up the vibes of Cairns.

Wander down the esplanade in the morning and you’ll spot people going for their morning jogs, or walking with takeaway coffee. Wander around at night, and you’ll see families enjoying the Ferris wheel, or friends enjoying a late-night ice cream under the fairy lights.

Highlights of the Esplanade include…

  • Swim in the Lagoon
  • Dine by the water
  • Explore the outdoor parks and catch some of the artwork
  • Catch a sunset

The Lagoon

At the beginning of the Esplanade is the Cairns Lagoon. It’s a saltwater swimming pool that offers visitors a unique swimming experience right by the sea. Don’t worry – there’s not a croc in sight at the Lagoon!

All year round, visitors can swim safely in this little pool. Remember, Cairns doesn’t actually have a beach (the closest thing Cairns has to a beach is the mudflats, which are not safe for swimming).

Enjoying the Esplanade

Luckily, this lagoon offers a free swimming experience all year round. It’s family-friendly, and there’s always a lifeguard or two running the area lagoon.

Stroll along the Esplanade for a pretty view of the waterfront. Spot boats on the horizon, and take a look at the public art which lines either side of the Esplanade. With parks, barbecues, basketball courts, tennis courts and free public spaces aplenty, there’s definitely a community vibe to the Esplanade.

Or if you’re after something more chill, then catch the Esplanade at sunset for unforgettable pink skies that hang over Trinity Inlet.

Or, catch dinner by the waterfront.

There are heaps of food and drink options at the Esplanade. Head to one of the waterfront restaurants for a picturesque meal! Expect a lovely coffee from Muddy’s, as well as Aussie brunch favourites at Ochre (think smashed avo and eggs on toast with native ingredients) or seafood restaurants that cook up the freshest catches.

Sip a pina colada at sunset, as you watch the day melt away.

Family-friendly spots along the Cairns Esplanade

If you’re heading to the esplanade with family, then you won’t be short on places to take the kids! With a fun obstacle course adventure playground just next to Muddy’s Cafe, you’ll be able to take the kids to a chilled afternoon in the park. Enjoy lovely views alongside a picnic in the park!
