Josephine Falls – Exploring Queensland’s Hidden Gems

Wooroonooran National Park in the north of Australia’s Queensland is home to Queensland’s tallest mountain, Mount Bartle Frere, at a towering 1622m you can see the spectacular peak soaring above the surrounding rainforests. The park is also part of the Wet Tropics and was officially declared a World Heritage Site in 1988.

Nestled in the lower foothills of the mountain the sparkle of the enchanting Josephine Falls brings life to the surrounding trees. From the carpark you will be able to stroll through the rainforest along the 700m tarred track before reaching the falls. There are several viewing platforms on the way, with the final one overlooking the Josephine Falls, providing a spectacular view and a perfect photo opportunity. This waterfall has become a popular attraction in recent years because of the sloping rocks, where over hundreds of years the water has carved a natural waterslide from the granite boulders. After the warmth of the rainforest on a hot day, the very best way to cool off is to skid down the waterslide and into the rock pool below.

From the falls there are several trails that you can walk along to see more of the luscious rainforest around you, the first of these trails is the Josephine Walking Track. An easy 1.2km return trip that will take you on a great tour of the tropical rainforest at the foot of Mount Bartle Frere. For the more adventurous, the Bartle Frere trail to Broken Nose is 10km return and can take up to 8 hours to walk, but it’s well worth the challenging climb as you’ll have a spectacular view of the nearby coast from the viewpoint at Broken Nose.

For the most experienced climbers, there is a 30km return trail that reaches deep into the Atherton Tablelands on the other side of Mount Bartle Frere, this demanding route can take up to 2 days to complete but allows you to pass over the peak of the mountain. Here you can enjoy the view standing on Queensland’s highest point. It will give you a chance to truly immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the park.

The experience of visiting the Josephine Falls and the surrounding area is one that you will never forget, with the waterslide, the rock pools and the amazing trails, you are guaranteed a wonderful time!
